Breakfast Apple Crumble
The idea of fruit with any other kind of food group is quite controversial in Ayurveda. It is generally advised that fruit should always be eaten on its own, preferably cooked and definitely not with dairy products. There are a list of certain types of fruit which shouldn’t be eaten together due to their energetic differences, for instance, bananas being quite difficult to digest should always be eaten alone.
There is a loophole though… If you cook the fruit with the other components, they take on the consistency and energy of the other said components thus making them easier to digest.
I never notice any discomfort from combining fruits with other things but I always take into consideration some caveats; I always eat it cooked, never raw and I never combine it with dairy products. And I don’t generally eat bananas. My advice would be, that if you are experiencing some deep or severe imbalances, it’s probably best to be a purist and eat cooked fruit on its own. And so it is with great caution that I share this recipe with you.
Serves 1
You will need:
1 apple (peeled if not organic) chopped into very thin slices
Cinnamon (no exact measurements, just sprinkle as much as desired)
2 tbsp of spelt flour
2 tbsp of hemp seeds (omit if pitta pacifying)
1 tsp of coconut oil
1 tsp of blackstrap molasses
Coconut yogurt
Honey
Flaked almonds
APPLES
Preheat the oven to 180 (fan). Place the slices of apple in a baking dish with a little bit of water, this is so the apples can stew whilst they are baking. Sprinkle some cinnamon on top, be as generous as you like.
CRUMBLE
With a spoon, mix the spelt flour, hemp seeds and cinnamon together.
Next add the coconut and begin to rub this with spelt by hand until it takes on a crumble texture.
Now with a fork, mix in the molasses. I like to use a fork as I feel this gives the most even distribution.
Once combined, pile this on top of the apples, sprinkle some flaked almonds and place in the oven for about 15-20 minutes. Keep checking to ensure the almonds don’t burn.
After that time, dig in with a spoon to ensure the apples are cooked and soft.
SERVE
Serve with a dollop of coconut yogurt on top with a drizzle of honey.
